Meet the Artist
Phillip Press was born July 16, 1993, in Bakersfield, California. By the age of three, Phillip showed a great interest in African animals in visual media and replicas. Also during this time, Phillip was diagnosed with autism. As a result of his autism, Phillip has a heightened sense of memory; he has memorized statistical data on the African animals he draws and has created his own informational documents about them (44 different African animals; 10 predators and 34 herbivores). Phillip’s interest in African animals continues to grow, and he has been steadily adding to his knowledge and collection of African media.
Phillip likes most animals in North America (he likes Tigers too), but he likes the animals of Africa more than the other animals because Africa has the best wildlife reserves and is full of creatures. The animals of Africa he likes a lot are the ones of the savannah because, in his opinion, they are more extraordinary than the ones in the deserts, forests, and mountains.
Phillip uniquely draws 40 African animals with his permanent markers without outlining. Each animal is then cut out by hand which gives an added dimension to his artwork. Some of his drawings have been displayed in Bakersfield, San Mateo, and San Francisco, California. Phillip received awards for his artwork at the San Mateo County Fair in San Mateo, California, and the Kern County Fair in Bakersfield, California. His artwork is featured in framed, original art pieces.
